Zendaya

Zendaya whirls off the tongue like a Bollywood spin, three syllables jangling like ankle bells, yet her roots dig deep in African soil: from Shona “tendai,” she means “to give thanks.” Born in Zimbabwean villages, the name hopped continents on the surefooted grace of the actress-singer-style icon Zendaya, who turned movie screens into launchpads and red carpets into runways. Stateside, parents have followed her sparkle—just 26 babies wore it in 2011, but nearly 300 little stars answered to Zendaya in 2024—still rare enough to feel boutique, yet popular enough to avoid playground mispronunciations. It’s a spicy, gratitude-filled blend of global cool and homely warmth, the kind of name that swaggers into a room with its own drumbeat, bows politely, and then steals the show.
