Meaning of Arianna
Arianna is the Italian form of Ariadne, a Cretan princess in Greek mythology who helped the hero Theseus escape the Labyrinth. Ariadne is usually explained as meaning 'most holy', from Greek elements meaning 'most' and 'holy'. In Italian it is pronounced ah-ree-AHN-nah, and in American English air-ee-AH-nuh.
The myth inspired Claudio Monteverdi's 1608 opera L'Arianna. Well-known bearers include author and businesswoman Arianna Huffington and Italian speed skater Arianna Fontana, the most decorated short track athlete in Olympic history.
In the United States, Arianna climbed through the 1980s and 1990s and entered the top 100 in 2003 at 86th. It peaked at 40th in 2014, when 5,276 girls were given the name, and has since slipped to 234th in 2025, with 1,323 babies.
